CSR and Sustainable Development – what is it?
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is simply the way we do business: responsible business is fair and honest.
CSR is a management strategy whereby companies voluntarily opt for the highest ethical standards, social interests and environmental considerations in their operations. Being responsible means incorporating responsibility into all aspects of the business, including building ethical relationships with all stakeholders of the organisation (employees, customers, suppliers), protecting the environment and acting for the benefit of local communities.
Sustainable Development means social and economic development that meets the needs of contemporary societies without compromising the development opportunities of future generations. It is based on the assumption that the economy, society and environment must develop in parallel.
The role of responsible financial institutions, including our bank, is to support and finance investments and clients operating in accordance with the principles of sustainable development and to reduce the financing of projects and parties that do not operate sustainably.
Responsible financial decisions are made after analysing environmental, social and corporate governance criteria (ESG).
Supporting economic development through responsible financing is a key dimension of our bank's responsibility. At BNP Paribas, we understand it as caring for the highest ethical standards, monitoring environmental, social and economic (ESG) aspects of transactions with all our clients, and offering clients products and services that respond to global challenges and local market conditions, and thus meet the changing needs of our clients.
We support Sustainable Development Goals
Under each pillar of responsibility, the bank has identified those SDGs where its contribution to the Polish market is the most significant. The bank is guided by the belief that Goal 17 is essential to the success of the 2030 Agenda and therefore actively engages in cross-sectoral cooperation for sustainable development.

Economic responsibility
The key dimension of BNP Paribas Bank's responsibility is to support long-term economic development by financing projects of individual customers and enterprises to support their growth. At the same time, we monitor ESG (environmental, social, governance) aspects of our clients' activities and transactions, in particular in sectors identified as sensitive from the CSR perspective. Financing decisions are preceded by an analysis of the social, economic and environmental impact of the company concerned and its project.
Responsibility at the workplace
Responsibility in this sense means actively working for the benefit of the environment in which the bank operates. This means focusing on areas where the bank can best contribute to positive social changes, i.e. by addressing social exclusion and supporting education and culture.
Responsibility for the natural environment
The bank minimises its negative environmental impact in three dimensions: reduction of negative impacts of its operational activity and promotion of eco-attitudes among its employees, responsible financing of the economy and clients, as well as cooperation and involvement in cross-sector initiatives.

BNP Paribas Foundation
The BNP Paribas Foundation carries out tasks that reflect the bank's social responsibility commitments.
The foundation acts to prevent social exclusion, ensure equal educational opportunities and support culture in small localities.
Since its establishment in 2006, it has been operating its own scholarship programmes, managing the social engagement of our employees and cooperating with community organisations by supporting them both financially and professionally.
The foundation also coordinates our employee volunteering programme that sees our employees working for the benefit of local communities. Volunteers tailor their form of involvement to their abilities and needs. They can act individually or in teams, pursue their own initiatives or take part in community actions coordinated by the foundation together with NGOs. Each employee is entitled to 16 additional hours of leave per year for charitable purposes.
The BNP Paribas Foundation carries out the bank's social mission by, among others, coordinating an employee volunteering programme. In 2021, bank volunteers devoted nearly 25,000 hours to benefit others, engaging in grassroots initiatives, the Noble Gift project or the “Krwinka” (Blood Cell) blood donation campaign. In March 2022, we announced a new “GObeyond” strategy for 2022-2025 in which we seek to maintain our leadership position in the area of sustainability. Our goal is to ensure greater accessibility and convenience to our clients. We are consistently improving the standards of our branches to accommodate our clients’ choices while at the same time ensuring the comfort of our advisers.
